In my most recent Netflix binge, I finished the last season of New Girl. It stars Zooey Deschanel, and her character lives with three (or four, depending on the season) guys. Their adventures are hilarious and sometimes, regrettably, relatable. I’ve found myself wanting to live with this odd group, if only for one night so we can play True American. (Look it up. You’ll probably be confused but intrigued. Think of it as how a drunk college student would run a history class.)

One scene at the end of season five hit me like the single digit temperatures of an Illinois winter.

Deschanel’s character, Jessica Day, is a quirky schoolteacher. Jake Johnson plays LA transplant/Chicago native Nick Miller. And they dated.

Nick’s discounting himself, saying he’s “the weird detour” women take before they find their perfect match. Jess yells, ”I’m tired of you being the only person who doesn’t see how incredible you are!”

Wow.

Hearing rejection after rejection can wear you down, but it doesn’t mean you’re a failure. Focus on what you have accomplished!

Consider Super Bowl LI. Do you think the Patriots, even when they were down 25 points in the third quarter, gave up? (You knew I would bring this up.) They might have felt deflated, but they didn’t quit; it’s not in their nature. I wasn’t in the huddle (surprising, I know) when Brady and his teammates got the ball down 28-3, so I'm not sure exactly what he said. But, I promise it wasn’t, “Well, that’s it. Where are we going for drinks tonight?”

My mom and sister (and dad, not pictured) have accomplished some amazing feats. Mom's a tenured teacher, Sarah's an LAT and ATC and in grad school, and dad runs his owns business. They are truly incredible; I hope they realize it. And YES, that's a Patriots jersey. Photo circa 2012.

For the next week, I challenge you to believe in yourself. Each time a negative thought enters your mind, squash it with an accomplishment from 2017. Maybe it’s the three miles you ran at the gym last night, or the promotion you earned at work last month. Maybe it’s going one week without drinking pop, or one week without smoking a cigarette.

Stop discounting yourself; look and see how incredible you truly are.
